Electrical Design Engineer (Intermediate/Senior)
JOB DESCRIPTION
Exceed Electrical Engineering is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer (Intermediate/Senior) with a minimum of six years experience in electrical power systems and distribution. The ideal candidate will have a mixture of experience providing electrical design for commercial and multi-family residential buildings, municipal water and wastewater systems, and industrial systems including application processes for power authorities (i.e., BC Hydro, Fortis).
This position will be based out of our office in the downtown heart of Kamloops, B.C., close to many restaurants and coffee shops. Kamloops is centrally located in the heart of the BC interior, located within reasonable travel distance to major centers including Vancouver, Kelowna, and Calgary. The ideal candidate will play a key role in supporting Exceed’s projects. You will be responsible for electrical power system design, managing junior engineers and technologists, as well as managing clients and projects. You will have extensive knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and familiarity with the BC Building Code. Part of the role will be to perform business development activities while engaging both new and existing clients. At times you may be required to travel throughout B.C. to remote sites with limited to no access to cell service.

Key Responsibilities
Low Voltage Work (under 750V):
- Electrical distribution design, including motor control centers (MCCs), lighting systems, and building distribution systems.
- Develop and revise technical specifications for low voltage applications.
- Read electrical drawings, identify errors, and mark up schematics with corrections for low voltage systems.
- Troubleshoot issues related to low voltage systems during field reviews or commissioning activities.
- Test finished low voltage products and systems during Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) or Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
Medium Voltage Work (750V and above):
- Design and implement medium voltage distribution systems, including substations and switchgear.
- Prepare Arc Flash and Coordination Studies using ETAP software.
- Setup and commissioning protective relays for medium voltage equipment.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations specific to medium voltage work.
- Perform field reviews and oversee commissioning of medium voltage installations.
- Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to address medium voltage design requirements and solutions.
Control Systems Knowledge an asset:
- Design and program control systems, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs).
- Develop control strategies for municipal water and wastewater systems, industrial systems, and commercial applications.
- Reverse engineer control systems to identify improvements and solutions.
- Provide guidance to junior engineers and technologists on control systems design and implementation.
- Integrate control systems with electrical distribution networks and ensure system compatibility.
General Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Exceed team from the conceptual design phase through project closeout.
- Attend client meetings to understand and record client requirements.
- Assist in developing technical standards and company procedures.
- Manage timelines and budgets for electrical-related projects.
- Travel province-wide to remote sites to perform field reviews and client interactions as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution with a focus on Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience working in an electrical engineering design consulting environment.
- Registration with, or eligibility to register with, Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. and hold P.Eng. status.
- Proficient in reading, understanding, and applying the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Knowledgeable about common electrical distribution products from manufacturers, including Schneider, Siemens, and Eaton.
- Strong computer skills and ability to communicate clearly and consistently.
- Entrepreneurial work ethic and ability to rapidly establish good working relationships with clients.
- Must possess a valid passport and driver’s license.
- This position has been deemed as Safety Sensitive – successful candidates may be required to pass a pre-employment Alcohol and Drug test.
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
